ATTENTION EVERYONE!

We are sure you know nails belong on your toes - not in your toes!

   However, just last week Brian A. came into our Mountain View location of WALK RITE FOR LIFE PEDORTHIC CENTERS to use his 2015 Medicare benefit for diabetic shoes and custom inserts.

   It was a good thing he came in that day, only two days released from the hospital (interesting that his shoes/feet weren't checked.) There were metal nails in his shoes that had penetrated his great toe and had been in his shoes for some time, so it seemed. Due to Brian’s neuropathy caused by his diabetes, his feet were numb (insensate) and he could not feel the nails!

   Medicare’s (not HMO’s, sadly) footwear benefits have already resulted in a large decrease in amputations since its inception in 1993. It was easy for the bean counters to figure out that shoes and inserts, along with TRAINED PROFESSIONALS to fit and dispense the products, are much less costly than amputations.

   80% of amputations typically start with shoe-caused blisters/ulcers.  Because diabetes can result in poor circulation to the feet, infections can occur and are problematic to heal due to the decreased blood supply.

   We at Walk Rite are proud to be a Medicare supplier to diabetics with foot concerns. It is our hope that the HMOs will see the benefit (both monetarily and therapeutically) in providing properly fitted shoes and custom inserts to anyone who needs these potentially foot-saving and live-saving products.

THE FOOT BONE IS CONNECTED TO THE BACKBONE…

Just the last week, Walk Rite For Life received an email from the clouds LITERALLY! 

Local “politico” – on advice from their doctor, emailed from an airplane, a request for custom molded orthotics. Back pain being their issue, the doctor suggested trying custom molded orthotics to help in relieving their back pain.

Osteopaths, Physiatrists, Physical Therapists and Chiropractors certainly understand that the “foot bones are connected to the backbone” as the feet are the foundation for the entire body and their practices are about whole body function and mechanics.

Correctly fitted, stable shoes, on the appropriate shoe lasts suggested for specific feet shapes along with shock attenuating custom molded orthotics, are the recommended gold standard in helping to stabilize the body via the feet.  A Johns Hopkins University Medical Newsletter regarding this information and recommendations is posted in all of our stores/pedorthic facilities.

Most specifically, persons with high arches, low arches, bow-legs (genu-valgus), knock knees (genu-varus) etc. can benefit from proper footgear to help relieve back pain by helping feet to be balanced in shoes.  Maintenance of shoes and timely replacement of athletic shoes are vitally important to help keep your feet “in balance.”

 RAPPING is nothing new here at Walk Rite Pedorthic Center. We have been rapping for many years - snapping our fingers and tapping our toes to the ditty "the foot bone is connected to the ankle bone, the ankle bone is connected to the knee bone, the knee bone is connected to the hip bone, etc etc. Therefore, this title "The foot bone is connected" will be the title of our ongoing monthly blog.

For this month's blog topic, we want to write about our very interesting recent client, Laurie M., Director of the Cheetah Conservation Fund in Namibia, Africa. This amazing woman is the founder and director of this fund.

We fabricated custom molded inserts with appropriate pedorthic modifications along with PROPERLY FITTED SHOES for her. We were honored that we able to play a  part in helping this amazing woman to WALK RITE more comfortably as she continues her work for the Cheetah Conservation Fund.
